Kinijit activists arrested

Kinijit activists Menbere Tsegaye, Saba Mekonen and Hirut Mekonen were taken from their houses by government security forces on December 24, 2006. All the three had visited Kinijit's chairman Eng. Hailu Shawel in Kaliti the same day. It is not known whether their arrests were related to the visit.
They have been detained at Maekelawi for the last six days. On Wednesday, they appeared before a federal first instance court. They were remanded in custody for fourteen days. Lawyers say that all cases of remand are now being taken by the police to the federal first instance court, which is located at Mexico Square. It has turned into a court specialized in executing the will of the police.
