First edition of the European Development Days: Focus on “Africa on the move”
Between 13 and 17 November, Africa will be in the spotlight for the first ever edition of the European Development Days (EDD). Politics, economics, art, cinema, fashion... Europe celebrates "Africa on the move" and discusses the main challenges for Africans and Europeans, through a series of events organized by the Directorate General for Development of the European Commission, under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
Governance will be at the heart of the political forum which takes place from 15 to17 November. The EDD will also include an EU-Africa Business Forum from 16 to 17 November, as well as several side events and art exhibitions.
The list of participants includes no less than 16 African Heads of State or Government; the President of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz; the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Mark Malloch Brown; several Heads of UN Funds and Agencies; top officials of the African Union, the African Development Bank, the OECD, and the ILO; the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Desmond Tutu; EU Foreign Affairs and Development Ministers; MEPs; non-governmental organizations; representatives of the African and European business communities; artists; journalists; experts from national Development agencies and other high level speakers.
European Development Days, which is intended to become an annual event, aims to enhance public awareness with regard to development cooperation issues and also to contribute to the strengthening of the effectiveness of EU development assistance in view of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
As Development involves much more than politics and economics, the European Development Days will include a wide range of events scattered throughout Brussels: a Millennium Campaign (“No Excuse 2015-Voices against poverty”), an African Art Exhibition, an African Comic Strip Exhibition, a Youth Art Competition – the Development Youth Prize 2006 – with entries from all Member States focussing on “Africa on the Move”, an African Film Festival, a “Development village”, a fashion show and a debate between representatives of African and European journalists and media.
